High-Intensity Language Training (HILT)

The High Intensity Language Training (HILT) program is designed to provide the most productive language learning experience in the shortest possible time.  It includes nine hours of private instruction each day throughout the week, including lunch with an instructor at a nearby restaurant.

The primary focus of the HILT course is determined by the needs and professional interests of the student.  A diagnostic test is conducted prior to the first class and specific goals are developed to meet the student’s desired level of proficiency and needs within the time that is available.  The major objective is to improve the student’s ability to speak and understand the spoken language.  New elements of the language are introduced each day, mistakes are corrected, and the student’s confidence and control in using idiomatic English is enhanced.  The student works with a team of three teachers, each of whom spends three hours a day with the student.  Supplementary activities include discussions of topics relating to the student’s work and interests, specialized vocabulary, video presentations and field trips.

EVENING PROGRAMS IN ENGLISH

Improving Your English (Evening)

The development of the evening program at ICLS stemmed from the many requests we have had from students and clients who wish to continue their English classes as they continue in their daily academic or professional lives.  We have designed the curriculum to include a heavy dose of practice in the pronunciation and vowel sounds of American English and controlled conversation based on current events and practical situations.  Lessons are taught using the ICLS approach to language teaching:  Induced Discourse.

Levels: Beginning through Advanced

TOEFL TEST PREPARATION

Programs

ICLS offers its students a challenging and invaluable TOEFL test preparation courses with several different scheduling options.  These schedules are listed below.

The TOEFL preparation program is open to students at the intermediate high and advanced levels.  Anyone with the appropriate level of English may enroll.

All classes include:

  • Test taking techniques and strategies

  • Timed exercises from each of the test sections allowing students to assess their own progress

  • Lessons targeting individual student areas of needed improvement

  • Writing components to prepare students for the Test of Written English

The course addresses each section of the exam.

In Listening Comprehension, students “fine tune” their listening discrimination skills.  They listen for key words and phrases, recognize idiomatic expressions, interpret tone of voice, and learn how to respond rapidly and effectively.

In developing Structure and Written Expression, students review grammar.  They focus on correct structural patterns and contrast them with their common misusage. As they concentrate on correct patterns, they began to see the inaccurate ones as they appear on sample tests.  They develop the ability to quickly identify errors and produce accurate responses.

In Reading Comprehension , students increase their reading speed.  They learn to recognize meaning within the context of given texts.  They identify main ideas and answer questions using skills such as inference, restatement, and paraphrasing.

TOEFL Morning Class Schedule

TOEFL Preparation is offered as the 10th level of our Intensive English Program.  Students joining the program at this level must pass a pre-TOEFL assessment.
