• The Institute

Located a few minutes walk from the Colosseum, the school occupies a four-storey building, with an airy terrace and garden, and is easily reached from all parts of the city by public transportation. We offer Italian language courses for students coming from all over the world and training courses for teachers of Italian for foreigners.

Courses are offered all year round and are taught by highly qualified teachers. The school is also a Teacher Training Centre that has developed dynamic teaching methods and a stimulating Italian language program that incorporates the personal interest of students as well as diverse aspects of the Italian life style. All courses are taught in small groups, limited to a maximum of 12 students.

Top (Italian in Italy)                            Top(OLIP)

• Methodology

The teaching method is based on communication. Students actively exercise the four fundamental functions of the language: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Particular attention, however, is given to conversation, to develop the student's capacity to express himself and communicate in Italian from the very beginning of the course. Naturally this method includes the study of the rules of syntax and grammar, which are essential to language learning, but which, alone, are not sufficient for gaining a real command of the language.

Top (Italian in Italy)                            Top(OLIP)

• Teaching Materials

The school's continuing research into improved methods has resulted in the development of textbooks and related cassettes. Various authentic materials have been carefully collected and are used throughout the course: slides, video-cassettes, radio excerpts, newspaper and magazine articles, films, literary texts, songs, etc.

•  The Programmes

Group programmes begin every two weeks with an average of 7 or 8 people and a maximum of 12. Groups include participants of many different nationalities. Lessons are held mornings and afternoons Monday to Friday. Each programme is available at all language levels. The academic hour is 50 minutes. Group programmes are conducted daily by two different teachers, each teaching a two hour session.
Standard Programme: includes four group lessons per day. According to their level, participants may acquire a basic knowledge of Italian or deepen and perfect their existing knowledge.
Combined Programme: includes four group lessons plus one or two individual lessons daily. The individual lesson offers the chance to personalise the material covered and focus on any special needs.
Extensive Programme: designed for people staying in Rome for longer periods of time. Consists of two-hour lessons held twice a week in the morning, afternoon or evening. Available from October to June.
One-to-One Tuition: individual tuition based on the student's own pace and learning ability.
"Senior Class": vacation/study for adults 50+ years. This programme is conducted in small, friendly groups of the same ability level and in a relaxed atmosphere. The rich cultural programme includes: professionally guided tours of Rome, excursions in the environs of Rome, a full day trip over the week-end, seminar on Italian food and wines.
Seminars: the school organises seminars led by experts active in various fields of culture. These seminars are directed towards those who have at least an intermediate knowledge of the language. The minimum number of participants in each group is five, and students interested in taking part in a particular seminar may reserve a place at the beginning of the course. The cost of the seminar is additional.

Top (Italian in Italy)                            Top(OLIP)

Certificates and Diplomas

At the end of the course, the school issues a Certificate of Attendance indicating the level of course completed. At the end of the sixth level, students have the opportunity to take a written and oral exam in order to obtain the school Italian Language Diploma. All our group programmes serve to prepare students for the C.I.L.S. Examination (Certificate of Italian as a Foreign Language). However, if you are interested in more specific examination preparation, we suggest 20 hours of individual lessons taught by our specialist teachers in this area. The Combined Programmes also provide effective preparation for the C.I.L.S. Examination.
Accommodation
We organise host family or other accommodation for you during your Italian programme. Upon request, we provide accommodation conveniently located near the school. Housing is available in private homes, student apartments and hotels for as long as necessary to fulfil your course requirements. Also, we include free of charge Internet access and interlinguistic exchange with Italian native speakers. We look forward enthusiastically to satisfying all your requests.

Florence

Florence is the native city of Dante, the father of the Italian language. To this day, almost 700 years after his death, Florence still enjoys the unquestioned title of 'centre of the Italian language'. Florence is also the cradle of the Renaissance and the home of innumerable art treasures. A short twenty minutes walk from the historical centre of the town will bring you to the hills where you can see the harmonious blend of nature and civilisation over the centuries. There is also the Tuscan countryside, famous for its characteristic rolling hills and art treasures, easily accessible by bus or train.

The Institute

Our school is housed in a beautiful palace in the Piazza Santa Maria Novella, one of the finest historical squares in Florence. Situated only 100 metres from the central station, our windows offer a splendid view of San Lorenzo and the Duomo which are just a short walk away. The school has a friendly atmosphere where you will feel at home.

Teaching methods are based on modern communication techniques with audiovisual and multimedia equipment, assisting students to acquire a solid grammatical base. All teachers are university graduates qualified in teaching Italian as a second language. They are fully experienced, enthusiastic and dedicated to making programmes enjoyable and productive. For best results, classes are divided into six levels and have no more than 7 students.

The Institute has its own language laboratory with video and CD-Rom facilities to support learning. These facilities are freely available to students, even after class hours. Internet access is also available.

The Programmes

Standard courses (4 hours a day) normally take place in the morning. If courses are held in the evening, they will not clash with scheduled extra curricular activities.

Intensive courses (6 hours a day) take place in the morning and early afternoon.

Conversation hours are usually offered either during the second session of standard courses or in the afternoon session of intensive courses.

One lesson hour lasts 50 minutes.

Activities

There is a whole variety of out of class activities enabling students to appreciate Florence in a relaxed way while putting into practice some of the language skills learned in class. We organise seminars on Italian history and culture, guided visits to museums and monuments, evening gatherings at the Institute or in Florentine pubs, and trips and excursions all over Tuscany.

In addition to the activities especially organised for our students, you can also benefit from the cultural programme, which IL GLOBO produces in collaboration with the public administration of Florence and other municipalities in the province.

In the summer and other periods of local/national festivities there are numerous concerts and cultural events about which we will be pleased to inform you.

ACQUI TERME, Piemonte

Acqui Terme lies in the heart of the Turin-Genoa-Milan area, in the rare and wonderful Monferrato landscape "rejoicing with castles and vineyards" according to the poet Carducci. The attractions are diverse: thermal baths, wine and food, outstanding cultural and historical heritage, together with tourism dedicated to sports and hiking. Acqui’s thermal baths, and their excellent therapeutic properties, were already well known in Roman times. Today they feature modern up-to-date spa facilities supported by highly qualified medical staff offering a full range of services, including facial and body beauty treatments.
Food and wine specialties of the region are another important economic and tourist attraction, with the production of 9 D.O.C. and 9 D.O.C.G wines. The prestigious Robellini Palace is the headquarters of the Regional Enoteca, a specialist wine cellar/shop offering the entire Piedmontese wine production and presenting an excellent opportunity for tasting and buying wines that go perfectly with the local traditional food.
Museum lovers and tourists who enjoy visiting monuments and works of art have plenty of interesting things to see. For example, the Saracco Palace hosts anthological exhibitions of major Italian contemporary artists.
Acqui Terme and the Monferrato area have a lot to offer in all seasons and make an excellent base for biking, trekking, horse riding, and other sports activities.
